A BOOZED-UP motorist crashed into a field while he was four-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit...with an empty bottle of Buckfast in the footwell.

Neil Conner, who was giving his friend a lift, lost control of his car and landed in the field because he was so drunk he failed to notice a bend in the road.

The details emerged last week when 47-year-old Conner appeared in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court to admit his guilt.

And he was told by a judge he may be jailed over the offence, which is his third conviction related to drink-driving.

The court heard that Conner, from Paisley, was spotted by another motorist after ploughing into a field in Barrhead on November 19.

Procurator fiscal depute Emma Jeffrey said police were called to the scene at around 8pm on the night in question.

She added: “Officers indicated that a bend in the road had been missed and that the accused’s car had entered the field. The accused was still in the driver’s seat of the vehicle and there was a strong smell of alcohol coming from his breath.

“A bottle of Buckfast was found lying within the footwell of the car.”

Dad-of-three Conner failed a breath test and was taken to a police station, where he blew 92microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath – more than four times the 22mcg limit.

As he called for background reports to be prepared ahead of sentencing, Sheriff Colin Pettigrew pointed out that Conner had previously been convicted of offences related to drink-driving in 2007 and 2010.

He said: “A custodial sentence will be an option open to me in the new year.”
Conner could be caged for as long as a year when he returns to the dock next month to learn his fate.
