STAFF at a Johnstone barber shop have said they are “chuffed to bits” after winning a prestigious prize.

The team at First Class Barbers, in the town’s High Street, claimed the Best Barbers crown at the Renfrewshire Business Awards.

They saw off competition from other barbers across the local area to scoop the prize for the first time.

First Class Barbers is co-owned by Michelle Adams and Suzanne Brown, who have been a mainstay in the town for more than 20 years.

The current team also includes trainee Carol Thorne.
Speaking to The Gazette, Michelle revealed she was shocked to even be nominated for the award.

She said: “We hadn’t heard anything about it until we were told we’d been nominated.

“One of our customers nominated us but we still don’t know who that was.

“Lots of people have been coming in to congratulate us. We are very grateful and really appreciate it all.”

The team at First Class Barbers have earned praise for their work in the community, which includes cutting the hair of customers in local care homes and supporting fundraising events, including a sponsored haircut for 10-year-old Mitchell Strachan, in aid of St Vincent’s Hospice.

Michelle, Suzanne and Carol collected their award during a glitzy ceremony at the Glynhill Hotel, in Renfrew.

“It was a great night,” said Michelle. “All the businesses got together and had a great time.

“I’ll be honest, we were one of the first awards to be announced and, after that, it was all just a blur, as we made sure we enjoyed ourselves.

“We are just chuffed to bits as it shows that we must be doing something right.”
