ARTHURLIE FC has paid tribute to former manager John Dove, who died this week.

Mr Dove was the club’s match secretary from 1975 to 1982.

He passed away on Monday, at the age of 78, after a period of illness in the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

A spokesman for Arthurlie said: “The committee and supporters of Arthurlie FC express their sympathy to the Dove family – his wife Martha, Graham, Paula and Karen.

“John was a supporter for over 40 years. His knowledge of the club was extensive. His banter and humour will be sadly missed.”

Mr Dove had an incredible record of success as manager.

Early in his tenure, in 1975, Arthurlie were promoted to the Central League’s B Division, before moving to the A Division in 1978.

They won the Whyte and Mackay trophy in 1976 and 1978.

In June 1977, they scooped the McLeod Trophy and, in December 1978, added the Sectional League Cup.

Three years later, Arthurlie reached the Scottish Junior Cup Final at Hampden Park, losing 1-0 to old rivals Pollok.

Mr Dove also saw a number of his players move to senior football, including Lex Richardson, who signed for St Mirren in 1976, and Willie Young and Tommy Graham, who went to Aston Villa.

In memory of Mr Dove, a minute’s silence will be observed prior to Arthurlie’s game against Irvine Vics this Saturday.
