COMMUTERS in Renfrewshire are to be handed free teabags as part of a drive to tackle loneliness.

The freebies will be on offer at Paisley Gilmour Street train station, courtesy of the Samaritans’ Brew Monday campaign.

Brew Monday takes place on January 21, with people being encouraged to get together with friends, family and workmates who may be lonely for a cuppa and a chat.

It is a takeover of 'Blue Monday,' the third Monday in January, which has been branded the most depressing day of the year due to issues such as poor weather conditions and high levels of debt.

Clare Haughey, Minister for Mental Health, said: “Samaritans volunteers are there to listen to anyone who is struggling to cope, day or night – and Brew Monday reminds us that we can all be there for someone through simple acts like taking the time to have a cup of tea and chat with our family, friends and colleagues.”
