RENFREWSHIRE was hit by another banking blow today as Santander announced its intention to close their Renfrew branch. 

The banking giant follows the Royal Bank of Scotland and Clydedale in leaving the town in recent years. 

While Santander while keep open its Paisley branch, there are still fears for the future of the staff in Renfrew. 

The branch has become the latest to close in the last two years in the area. 

Here's a list of all the branches to have closed since 2016: 

1. Clydesdale Branch, Bridge of Weir

Labelled an "essential" service at the time of its closure in April 2016, customers form the branch were forced to transfer to Paisley. 

Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, also criticised the bank’s decision to shut the branch.

He said at the time: "I am very concerned about the announced closure of the Bridge of Weir branch in my constituency and have asked the Clydesdale Bank to reconsider this decision.

"The Clydesdale branch is extremely important to the Bridge of Weir community who will be saddened to lose their local bank."

2. Clydesdale, Johnstone and Renfrew

The banking giant was at it again just nine months later as it announced the closure of the branches in Johnstone and Renfrew. 

A move towards electronic banking was blamed for the decision, which left Clydesdale customers in both towns facing a trip to Paisley to carry out their transactions.

Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP Mhairi Black called on bank bosses to reconsider the closure plans.

She told The Gazette: "This is devastating news for staff and for customers of Clydesdale Bank, who rely on their local branch for banking."

3. Royal Bank of Scotland, Renfrew

Less than a year passed before Renfrew was hit by another blow as RBS bosses announced their decision to close the town's branch. 

The move was a blow to residents in Renfrew, as well as those in the likes of Erskine, Inchinnan and Bishopton.

Derek Mackay, Renfrewshire North and West MSP, described the decision as "very disappointing".

4. Bank of Scotland, Paisley South

Bank of Scotland announced its intention to close Paisley South branch, in Neilston Road, in November 2018. 

Paisley and Renfrewshire South MP Mhairi Black hit out at the decision, branding it “outrageous."

She has now written to Bank of Scotland’s managing director, Robin Bulloch, to ask for an urgent rethink.

The branch will close in February. 

5. Santander, Renfrew
