CALLS have been made to improve the quality of street lighting in Linwood after a pensioner was killed in a collision with a van.
George Wilkins, 84, was struck by a Vauxhall Combo while crossing Clippens Road.

The much-loved grandad, who lived in nearby Abernethy Drive, was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow, but died from his injuries.

The tragic incident took place three months after another elderly person died as a result of being hit by a vehicle in Linwood during the early evening.

Elizabeth Dunnion, 85, was struck by a Mazda 3 while crossing Bridge of Weir Road in October as she made her way to evening Mass at St Conval’s Church.

It is unclear if lighting conditions contributed to either tragedy but some residents and local councillors have insisted action must be taken.

Councillor Jim Sheridan, who represents Linwood, said: “When I first heard about this incident, I contacted the police.

“I was somewhat concerned because there is a bit of a school of thought that these new LED lights are not very good.

“People have been complaining about them for a good while now that they are not giving drivers the same vision.

“I was told an investigation is being carried out.”

Linwood residents have also spoken out on social media to raise concerns regarding lighting, particularly during the darker winter nights.

Jim Brown paid tribute to Mr Wilkins while highlighting his worry for road safety in the area.

He said on Facebook: “Rest in peace George Wilkie, the lights aren’t bright enough. We used to watch Craigends school football teams back in the day. A very friendly man.”

Margaret Johnston took to Facebook to write: “The new lighting is horrendous, it’s not safe for either drivers or pedestrians.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “Our sympathies are with the family and friends of George Wilkins following this tragic incident.

“Road safety is of paramount importance and, following the outcome of the police investigation, we will consider any measures which could enhance safety for all road users.”
