TALENTED pensioners have been creating their own films as part of a nationwide campaign.

The “golden oldies” from across Renfrewshire put together four animations to share the message that, if older people stay mobile, they can continue to live life to the full and won’t be a burden on the NHS.

The films are set to be premiered in Erskine today at the Older and Bolder event, as part of the Scottish Government’s Fire Starter Festival.

While the seniors had fun making animations Prevention Is Cheaper, No Cotton Wool, Don’t Let Doctors and Shrink to a Chair, they say the messages are serious.

Erskine man Norrie Mathieson, 80, said: “If I can help one person change their life for the better, then it will all be worthwhile.”

Meanwhile, Paisley duo Agnes Alexander, 88, and Carol Kyle both believe the campaign is better than wasting the latter years of their life.

Agnes said: “I don’t want to waste any of my life on something I know there ain’t a goal at the end. And we’re all of that age.

“We don’t know how long we’ve got. But by gum, we’ll give it our best shot.”

While Carol added: “It’s a great message for people who are isolated. You just vegetate if you don’t have anything to look forward to or get out to.

“Being involved in the campaign has meant a lot to me because I know what it’s like to feel like that and I want to encourage people to get over that.”

All those who helped to create the animations are members of Paisley-based social enterprise ROAR: Connections for Life, whose general manager, Nicola Hanssen, said: “We want all older adults to have the support they need to be bolder and to stay mobile.”
