A PATIENT has died after contracting a bacterial infection at Paisley's Royal Alexandra Hospital.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has said the patient was 'seriously unwell' and a bacterial infection was 'one of a number of contributory factors' to the their death.

A second patient is being treated and is recovering, while a third has not required treatment and is stable from an 'unrelated condition'.

Control measures were put in place immediately, the health board has said.

A statement from NHSGGC said: "Sadly a patient, who was seriously unwell from their underlying condition, has died and a bacterial infection was one of a number of contributory factors.

"A second patient has been treated and is recovering and a third patient has not required treatment and is stable from an unrelated condition.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the patient who has passed away.

"We have informed the families about the situation and are providing support to them.

"We closely monitor infection rates within our hospitals at all times.

"We have managed this situation fully in line with national guidance and it is this rigorous approach to infection control that identified and managed this effectively.

"Control measures were put in place immediately.

"Patients in the unit have been screened and tests have proved negative. There have been no further cases."

The news comes after two babies died at Glasgow's Princess Royal Maternity Hospital last month after contracting Staphylococcus aureus in the neonatal unit. A third baby had to be treated for the infection.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the two babies that died were extremely poorly due to their very early birth. Infection was one of a number of contributing causes in both deaths.
