A JOHNSTONE gym is now kitted out with life-saving equipment after churchgoers provided a defibrillator for its members.

Members of Unite Spiritualist Church, based in MacDowall Street, decided to donate the machine after finding they had some spare cash leftover from fundraising.

As a non-profit making institution, the churchgoers needed to find a charitable organisation for the money to go to.

And when they discovered Saltire Boxing Gym, based in the same building, were in need of a defibrillator, they said it was the perfect thing to use the cash for.

Helen Kyver, one of the founders of the church, said: “The members at the gym are absolutely delighted.

“When we found out they were trying to get a defibrillator, we thought, why not help them when they are just downstairs?

“It is a real life-saver and something which could be so helpful if someone does collapse at the gym or if anything happens to any of us.

“It is a pretty popular gym and Colin has all sorts of classes going on, so I think it’s important they have this machine.”

The gym was founded in 2006 by boxing trainer Colin Bellshaw, and prides itself on offering a place for the Johnstone community to enjoy the sport.
