BUS bosses have backed down in their quest to raise prices on a route by nearly double - but there will still be an increase.

McGill’s chiefs outlined plans to raise the prices on the replacement X23 peak service, which is an important link for commuters in Erskine, Inchinnan, and Renfrew to Glasgow.

Under proposals set out by managing director Ralph Roberts, prices would increase from £4.50 to £7 for a day ticket, from £18.50 to £30 for a weekly ticket and from £61.50 to £100 for a monthly ticket.

This was met with widespread disaproval from bus users, who reacted furiously to the proposals and accused McGill's of holding them to ransom.

Over 1,000 people contacted their local MSP Derek Mackay over the issue and more than 1,500 signed an online petition demanding action.

And their action appears to have been listened to by McGill's chiefs who have now backed down from the original increase.

Full details are to follow, but the proposed increase for a day ticket is now £5.50, a weekly ticket is £24, and a monthly ticket is £80.

Speaking immediately after the revelation, Mr Mackay said: "McGill’s have just advised me that they will issue full details on the timetables of the new route and fares on Monday.

"I welcome the fact they have listened to those who have expressed concern over the initially planned increase and will be able to comment further once the full details are available."

McGill's has been contacted for comment.
