A SCOUT group which has expanded significantly over the past half a decade has been rewarded for its achievement.

The Howwood Scout Group was started up by villagers Lorna Poole and Sarah Galloway five years ago and had just five children, two of which were their own kids, attending the club.

There was initially just a Beavers group but, as that got busier, the pair started a Cubs group too, and now they welcome almost 50 kids every week through the doors of the parish church.

To honour its growth, the group has now received the Chief Scout’s Commendation Award to mark its ‘outstanding’ efforts.

Ian Hunter, district commissioner, said: “The success of Howwood Scout Group is nothing short of amazing. In such a short period of time, Lorna and Sarah have built the Beavers and Cubs to be such a success that every week there are in excess of 50 kids enjoying the fun and adventure of Scouting.

“Well done to Lorna and Sarah. Both have done a fantastic job and it was a delight to present this award on behalf of the Chief Scout.”

Lorna added: “A lot of hard work has gone into the group. There isn’t much in the village for kids to do, but now we can take these children out on trips where they can have fun.”
