AN old toilet block in a Renfrew park is set to be transformed into a workspace which inspires young people to get on their bikes.

Kustom Kruizers – a community bicycle project – aims to teach youngsters between the age of 13 and 21 how to strip, build and restore bikes.

The community interest company has been awarded £25,000 by Renfrewshire Council to refurbish the former toilet block in Robertson Park and turn it into a bicycle workspace, hub and training centre.

The funding will be received upon a successful completion of an asset transfer, after the award was approved at a Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board.

Dave Neill is the man behind Kustom Kruizers, which holds community workshops in parks across Renfrew and Paisley.

He and his team have been teaching young people how to complete a bicycle building or restoration project.

Dave has previously spoken of his hope to expand the company to give training to young people and help them get recognised qualifications.

He said: “We’ve been running trial projects in schools for the courses so that we can apply for funding and prove that it works.

“We’re starting to link up with other groups and projects and we’re going to start doing family general maintenance classes on Saturday mornings as well as two nights a week.

“We’re also going to have some teenagers in doing work experience.

“We’ve had a great response from parents and young people who’ve attended our workshops, we’ve not had one bit of negative feedback.

“People out there know nothing about bikes and want us to maybe change their bike chain.

“We’ll show them how to do it rather than just do it for them.”

Kustom Kruizers takes in donations of bikes and also collects them from council recycling centres.
