A DISTRACTED driver left a man with horrific injuries by ploughing into him while changing the radio in his van.

Colin Sloss, 29, wasn’t paying attention to the road when he drove through a red light on Valentine’s Day, 2017.

His van careered into 54-year-old David Moffat, leaving him unconscious and with serious head, leg and chest injuries.

Mr Moffat ended up spending three months in intensive care.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how passers-by stopped to help the victim.

Meanwhile, Sloss told them: “Everyone said I went through a red light. I didn’t, I was only changing the radio.”

Sloss, from Bridge of Weir, admitted a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Sheriff Norman Ritchie QC jailed him for 16 months and banned him from the roads for two years.

The court heard Sloss, who is already serving a prison sentence for a previous offence, had been driving along Springburn Road, Glasgow, and failed to stop at a red light.

Procurator fiscal depute Mark Allan said he continued through the junction and “appeared to be in a hurry,” with other motorists describing his driving as “erratic.”

Sloss approached a junction and, when the car in front stopped for the red light, he continued driving.

Mr Moffat was using a pedestrian crossing when he was hit by the van.

As a result of his head injuries, he now has issues with memory loss.

He was released from hospital into his daughter’s care and has been receiving physical therapy a few times a week.

Mr Allan said he “cannot yet fully take care of himself but can now make microwave ready meals and a cup of tea.”
