SWEET-toothed pupils at a Johnstone school raised nearly £500 thanks to a charity bake-off.

The Mary Berrys of tomorrow from Thorn Primary tried their hand at a whole host of delicious desserts as they raised valuable funds for Cancer Research UK.

The kind-hearted kids at the school arranged Thorn’s Greatest Bake-Off themselves, with Napier House captains Sophie Henderson and Olivia Vanni leading the efforts.

Prior to the event, the girls arranged a meeting with Julie Scott, Morrisons’ community champion in Johnstone, and the generous store gifted the ‘eggcellent’ prizes to the school.

Nearly 80 talented bakers took on the challenge to claim their own Easter egg while all of the cakes were then sold to pupils, staff and parents, raising a whopping £484.65 for the charity.

But the generosity wasn’t finished there, as Sophie took the unsold cakes to St Vincent’s Hospice for patients and their visitors to enjoy.

The proud mums of Sophie and Olivia were absolutely delighted to see the success of the their hard work and couldn’t believe how many pupils had taken part.

Joanne Henderson, Sophie’s mum, said: “The amount of cakes that were handed in was amazing.

“In my seven years at the school I have never seen anything like it.”

While Evelyn Vanni, Olivia’s mum, added: “Amazing support for Napier’s charity event.

“Proud mum alert.”

A school spokesperson added: “We would like to thank Morrisons and Julie for their continued support to Thorn Primary. We really appreciate all they do for us.

“The charity the girls selected is not the only winners from this challenge. The pupils organised the event independently while gaining and developing valuable organisational and leadership skills in the process.”
