LOCHWINNOCH played host to scone-noisseurs from all across Scotland as the best in the business descended on the village for a special competition.

Sweet-toothed bakers packed into the McKillop Institute on Sunday in a bid to see their creation crowned at the second annual World Scone Making Championships.

Playing a part in the Lochwinnoch Arts Festival for the first time, the competition built on the success of last year’s inaugural event and featured 14 bakers from across the country.

A panel of judges, including local MP Mhairi Black, sunk their teeth into the delightful delicacies before crowning Vivien Chan’s effort as the best scone in the world.

Philip Mille took home the runner-up prize, while Lisa Bond’s tasty treat won best presentation, a new award for 2019.

For organiser David Bain, who was inspired to start the competition after reading about the World Porridge Making Championships, the day was a resounding success.

He told The Gazette: “The scones were of an exceptionally high quality this year.

“It was fantastic to see the effort put in by all of the talented contestants and it was so hard to judge. Vivien was a worthy winner.

“When the competition was going on, we were surrounded by accordion music from some of the other shows at the festival and that just added to the atmosphere.”

The talented trio each took home a bespoke plate which was designed and made by Wendy Kershaw, a ceramicist who lives in Lochwinnoch.

“It’s all about helping to put Lochwinnoch on the map,” David continued.

“We really appreciate what Wendy did for us and she has been a great support for the competition.

“Next year, we hope to build on the success.”
