THE cost of a hotel room in Glasgow has increased faster than anywhere else in the UK in the last year.

More tourists, conferences and business travellers coming to the city has also led to more rooms being available as hotel chains continue open in the city.

The report by PwC found the number of hotel rooms in Glasgow has grown by more than 10% in a year to more than 11,000.

Events like Trnsmt and the ongoing success of the Hydro have also been cited as boosting the hotel trade with music fans booking overnight stays in the city.

The trend is set to continue with more hotels planned to open this year and next.

Claire Reid , Head of Retail & Leisure for PwC in Scotland, said: “Glasgow had an exceptional 2018, becoming the fastest growing city in the UK in terms of average daily rate.

“The opening of almost 1,000 new rooms has led to a reduction in RevPAR (Revenue Per Available Room) but with the lure of The SSE Hydro and the TRNSMT music festival along with the success of the city’s ongoing international charm offensive, we can expect a strong 2019 with an additional 1,400 new rooms opening in 2019 and 2020.”

The Glasgow average price rise of 6.1% to £76.52 per night was three times higher than the UK national average of 1.7%.

While Glasgow grew, Edinburgh stayed static and the capital was more expensive at £103 per night , the most expensive outside London.

Radisson Red opened last year close to the SEC and Hydro with a £30m 174 bedroom hotel overlooking the River Clyde.

Travelodge opened its seventh hotel in Glasgow this year and has plans for five more creating hundreds of jobs.

Ireland’s biggest hotel group Dalata is planning a new 300 bedroom hotel in Renfrew Street.

And Native Hotels opened in the Anchor Line building with 64 apartment hotel rooms in December last year.
