A VISIT to mark the 50th anniversary of twinning links between Renfrewshire and the German city of Fürth is set to take place next month.

Renfrewshire Council is planning to invite a delegation from the Bavarian city to mark five decades of exchanged visits from the respective regions.

The official Twinning Charter was signed in June 1969 between Paisley and Fürth.

In 1975 the former burghs of Paisley, Barrhead, Johnstone and Renfrew became Renfrew District and the twinning link was extended to the then district as a whole.

It has now been proposed that a four day visit is hosted by Renfrewshire Council in April to celebrate the long standing relationship.

It’s a partnership that has previously caused controversy among elected members, as Councillor Paul Mack was suspended in 2016 for comments regarding a council-funded trip to Germany.

He accused the excursion of being an excuse for his colleagues “going on the lash and playing hide the Frankfurter”.

During the hearing he conducted his own defence and said “he could not find anyone in the whole of Paisley who is offended by the remark.”

After a Standards Commission hearing, Councillor Mack was given a three-month ban from the Education and Children’s Services Policy Board.

The cost of the latest planned visit will be met within the International Links budget provision for the financial year 2019/20.

The proposals will be put forward for approval at Wednesday’s Finance, Resources and Customer Services Policy Board.
