A WOMAN was saved from trying to harm herself with a knife after police fired a taser for only the second time ever in the area.
The incident took place at around 8.30pm on Wednesday after police were called to reports of a 33-year-old woman threatening to harm herself within a property in Elderslie.
Officers said the woman refused to cooperate and, amid fears for her safety, a taser was fired at her.
It is only the second time officers in the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde division have fired the weapon, which incapacitates the target by delivering an electric current.
The knife was recovered by officers and the woman was taken to hospital to be assessed before she was arrested "for her own safety."
Police confirmed that no-one was injured during the incident.
