SCHOOLKIDS in Linwood took part in a project aimed at raising their awareness of the dangers of alcohol a decade ago.
The Young Persons Alcohol Project worked with second year pupils from 11 schools across Renfrewshire and used several different methods to educate the pupils about booze.
The driving force behind the project was Renfrewshire Council’s ASIST team, which received support from several local organisations, including Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and
Rescue, the Renfrewshire Council for Alcohol Trust and PACE Theatre Company.
Councillor Brian Lawson, Renfrewshire Council’s community safety spokesman at the time, said: “This project highlights important health and safety messages aimed at young people.
“The aim of the workshops is to give young people information which will help them make safe choices.
“Pupils will be involved in a series of workshops, including PACE Theatre Group’s production called Take a Drink, which highlights the consequences of alcohol misuse.
“There will also be a scenario called The Weakest Drink, presented to the children by Strathclyde Police’s drug awareness officers, and a simulation of chip pan fires and a car crash by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue.”
Area commander Simon Hunt, of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, added: “The project greatly complements the work of the fire service in engaging with young people.”
