ORGANISERS of the main event in Johnstone’s social calendar have eased fears it could be forced to move due to the condition of Thomas Shanks Park.

As previously reported in The Gazette, there were concerns Johnstone Gala Day, due to take place in August, may have to relocate or be cancelled altogether if repairs aren’t carried out in time.

The condition of the park has long been a source of frustration for residents.

However, Renfrewshire Council has told The Gazette it expects planned work on the park to be completed before the gala day.

Now organisers say they will proceed as normal following the reassurances and are looking for stall bookings for the big event on Sunday, August 25.

Tom Wallace, chair of Johnstone Community Council, said: “From the response the council gave to The Gazette about the paths in the park, we are confident that our concerns will be dealt with.

“The organising committee have held their first planning meeting and are looking forward to making the event the best yet.”
