A BARRHEAD church will ring its bells today for seven minutes, in a show of solidarity and sympathy with France following the devastating fire that ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral.

The bells will ring at 7pm from Bourock Parish Church, which is roughly the same time that the fire broke out at the 850-year-old Gothic building.

And during the blaze, most of the roof was destroyed, causing the steeple to collapse.

Over £692 million has been donated to help rebuild the Notre Dame – including generous funds given by Apple, the owners of L’Oreal and designers such as Chanel, Dior and Gucci.

Reverend of Bourock Parish Church, Pamela Gordon, told the Barrhead News: “The Bourock Church is part of the world Church and when a particular church is affected in such a way, we feel that it is only appropriate that we show our support.

“I am sure that there are people in the East Renfrewshire area that have visited Notre Dame Cathedral and will have a personal significance to them.

“I think it about showing support and allowing people to express their own way of support, if they’ve been there themselves.”

Barrhead News:

Rev Jan Steyn, minister of the Scots Kirk in Paris, added that Notre Dame was a place of awe, mystery and majesty and the disaster has had a profound impact on people.

“It is not only a presence for the Parisians, it belongs to the world,” he said.

“On the night of the fire, we all went to bed with a sense of loss.

“Something we have taken for granted for centuries, or at least for as long as we remember, seemed to be disappearing right in front of us.

“Notre Dame is a tourist attraction, a place of worship, a refuge, a character in movies and novels.

“But for millions of people it is an icon, a home, a place with personality.

“For Parisians, Notre Dame is a calming presence and a reminder of the bigger presence.

“It is a place revered by a nation even though France is a secular state.”
