THREE members of the same family ended up in handcuffs after tempers flared during a wake.

Police were called to a disturbance involving members of the Macmonagle family, who had gathered at The Hazel Arms, in Johnstone, following a relative's funeral.

Andrew Macmonagle and his sons Ryan and Liam were all arrested during the incident, which took place on December 5, 2017.

All three men, of Scott Avenue, Johnstone, denied they had done anything wrong but were convicted following a trial at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Defence witness Linda McDonald, who was among those attending the wake, told the court she thought police had been over the top in the way they dealt with the family.

Ms McDonald, who works as a dementia nurse at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital, said: “Ryan was a bit upset in the pub and he went outside. His mum asked me to go and see how he was. He was just going on about not getting served in the shop – nothing much, really.”

When asked if she thought police had dealt with the events of that day properly, Ms McDonald said: “Absolutely not. There was no need for pulling anyone about or anything like that.

“I don’t know what to say about it. It was chaotic. I don’t think there was any need for it, I don’t think there was any need for any of it.

“It was a very sad and terrible day for them all. I don’t know what to say, it just went crazy.”

Defence witness Isabelle Dailly also said the situation got out of control when the police were called.

The retired shop assistant, who lives in Johnstone, said: “Liam was getting really upset about his dad. I was concerned about all of the officers that were on top of him. I was kind of upset.”
