A CARING teenager is getting ready to become the star of Kilbarchan after being named this year’s Miss Lilias.

Mabel Wylie, 16, has been handed the prestigious role for the annual Lilias Day celebrations on Saturday, June 1.

The Johnstone High School student was given the honour in recognition of sacrificing much of her time during the summer to volunteer at Renfrewshire Leisure activity camps.

She has also completed her Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award and volunteers weekly to teach swimming to local kids.

Mabel will get the chance to read a proclamation to officially open Lilias Day and, later in the year, will have the honour of switching on the village’s Christmas lights.

Graeme Stockton, a Lilias Day committee member, said: “Mabel is delighted and so are her family. She really represents the values of the village.

“We are trying a few new things this year, so we are hoping they turn out well.

“The greatest thing about Lilias Day is the money it raises for local groups and organisations. It’s an important day for the village.”

Mabel will be accompanied on the day by her two attendants, Sarah Sandground and Lauren Breckenridge.

Joining the trio will be the Kilbarchan Primary king and queen, Iain Grant and Poppy Edgar.

Their attendants will be Kayla Drummond and Matthew McIvor.

Lilias Day is the centrepiece of Lilifest – a month-long festival which will see visitors flocking to Kilbarchan over the coming weeks.

On the day itself, people are invited to take part in the scarecrow competition for the first time, which will run alongside the ‘decorate your house’ contest.

If you’re the competitive type, people are being urged to enter a team into the tug-of-war contest by emailing info@liliasday.co.uk and there’s a kids’ photography competition for those aged five to 11 to get involved in. People can submit their entries to Kilbarchan Primary School or the Co-op store by Friday, May 17.
