PLAYFUL pensioners have been enjoying a new lease of life, thanks to a revolutionary scheme that gives them the chance to spend time with youngsters.

Erskine Community Nursery and veterans charity Erskine teamed up to launch the Brighter Together initiative.

This sees tots as young as three spending the afternoon in the company of residents at the charity’s home in Bishopton, playing games, sharing stories and breaking down barriers.

Organisers said it has been a thrill to see how well the children bond with the ‘golden oldies’.

Brenda MacKenzie, nursery chairperson, told The Gazette: “Brighter Together helps to teach the children about empathy, companionship and recognising the differences between us.

“We want to make the kids a part of the community and show them how important that is.

“The children just love going to the home and getting the chance to build up relationships with their new friends. It’s been great for them.”

Despite being at opposite ends of the age spectrum, the groups found they had plenty in common.

And among the things that brought them together was a simple putty.

Brenda said: “Play-Doh is such a leveller. Some of the older people proved to be quite skilled with it and came up with all sorts of creations.”

Craig Berry, activities co-ordinator at Erskine, said: “Age is just a number – and our veterans have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the inter-generational programme.

“Our residents are so happy when the children come to visit as it has a knock-on effect, leaving them happy all day.

“It also encourages a walk down memory lane, with families remembering happy times gone by.

“It’s a pleasure to see everyone spending time together and smiles all round.”
