JUDY Murray has made a promise to council chiefs – give Robertson Park’s run-down tennis courts a makeover and she’ll come to Renfrew.

The vow comes after pictures emerged of the facility, which showed an unplayable surface, overgrown weeds and a locked gate.

That led the high profile tennis coach to call out Renfrewshire Council and tell the public body to tidy up the courts and unlock the gate so people could play.

And Judy has now spoken out for a second time about the Robertson Park facility, posting on social media: “They need a makeover and a community group to drive activity.

“If you get them playable Renfrewshire Council, I’ll come and help to build you a local workforce.”

Judy, mum of professional players Andy and Jamie, is known to work tirelessly to make tennis available to people of all ages and backgrounds.

She appeared to be responding to a statement from the council, which said the courts had been “closed as normal” for winter.

Speaking in May, a local authority spokesman confirmed works to bring the courts up to standard had been scheduled for the coming weeks.

He said: “The tennis courts at Robertson Park have been closed as normal over the winter period – but are due to reopen for the summer in the next couple of weeks.

“Some maintenance is needed on the surface so that can happen, but this work has been scheduled – we will have staff on site over the coming week to remove weeds and level the surface before relining the court and adding the nets.”

The state of the courts had initially been raised by Stewart Armstrong, who tweeted Judy in a bid to “embarrass” the council into action.

He said: “Judy Murray is such a positive influence in Scottish sport and is often tweeting about refurbished courts so I thought I would be able to get some publicity and embarrass the council into action.”
