ILLEGALLY placed advertising hoardings in Johnstone need to be removed as they are hurting businesses in the town, according to campaigners.

The controversial boards at the junction of George Street, High Street, and MacDowall Street have all been placed without Renfrewshire Council’s permission, leading to calls for action to be taken over the “eyesore” site.

Local councillor Derek Bibby, who represents Johnstone North, says he has received several complaints from residents who say they are a dangerous distraction to drivers.

The Labour man told The Gazette: “These advertising hoardings are an eyesore and a distraction to drivers at one of the busiest junctions in the town.

“If they are not removed there is a real fear they will sooner or later contribute to an accident.

The Gazette:

“The council has been dragging its feet over this issue and should take urgent action to get them removed and ensure there is no repetition.”

The issue has been raised a number of times by Cllr Bibby and he believes the council has made no effort to remove the boards since he brought it to their attention in May.

Cllr Bibby’s complaints have also been voiced by Johnstone Community Council, which believes the council has failed to fulfill promises to take action.

Chairman Tom Wallace said: “The signs are like rabbits and it seems like every time you look at them even more have appeared.

“We appreciate people have to advertise their business but this is not the way to do it.

“We want the town to look its best and to be attractive for shoppers but these eyesore boards can only be hurting businesses on our High Street.

“We want these removed.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “The signs at this location have been placed without the prior consent of the local planning authority. Formal enforcement action is being considered and appropriate action will be taken.”
