A KILBARCHAN couple who met in a church choir in 1937 were still in harmony decades later in 2009.

Fun-loving duo John Clark, 91, and wife Kathleen, 88, celebrated 65 years of marriage on June 12 that year, surrounded by their family.

Kathleen said at the time: “Our wedding day was the best day of our lives. Things were so uncertain during the war and we only had a short time together until John went back to Cairo before he finally came home.”

Their 56-year-old daughter, Christine Berry, added: “They have always been really happy with each other and supportive of each other’s needs. They have always been fun-loving – they still are – and are young at heart.

“Family means everything to them and they have always supported and encouraged each and every one of us. We are all very grateful to them.”

The 65th wedding anniversary was also celebrated by John and Kathleen’s other daughter, Carol Paterson, 60, as well as their six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Christine said: “My mum and dad met before the war, in 1937, when they were both members of St Matthew’s Church Choir, in Glasgow. Dad was an art teacher and was the first art teacher to become a headteacher.

“He retired in 1978 as headteacher of Penilee Secondary School. Mum worked at Robert Gibson the bookseller, in Glasgow, and retired at the same time.

“When they retired, my dad started painting again and my mum took up embroidery and they exhibited their work.”

The family organised a special party for the happy couple.
