COUNCILLORS have approved a contract which will see reconstruction works carried out at Hawkhead Cemetery, writes Jack Thomson

Around £522,000 is expected to be spent overhauling the drainage and road surfacing of the dilapidated cemetery.

Mac Asphalt Limited has been given the contact, with works set to begin next month and be completed in November.

The contract was given the green light at Wednesday’s Finance, Resources and Customer Services Policy Board.

At the council’s budget meeting in March, it was agreed £1 million of revenue funding would be invested to deliver improvements in cemeteries across Renfrewshire.

As well as Hawkhead, Bishopton and Inchinnan were identified as priorities.

Councillor Will Mylet was delighted to see progress being made at Hawkhead Cemetery.

He said: “I’ve been dealing with that for quite a while now and been shouting about it for ages. If you make enough noise, you will find stuff gets done.

“The administration has managed to get it this time so I’m glad to see it is happening.”
