A WOMAN is on a mission to clean up Johnstone Castle – and needs your help to do it.

Gillian Gillespie has created the area’s first clean-up team, a group of dedicated volunteers who have braved all weathers to bring back some sparkle.

The team has spent July picking up rubbish in different parts of the scheme and has plans to branch out to the Bluebell Woods in the near future.

Ms Gillespie, 46, said: “My mum and I had been going out to walk the dogs and we noticed that there was quite a lot of rubbish in the area.

“We just started picking it up as we went along.

“I put up some pictures on Facebook and people were commenting about all the rubbish that was just lying about.

“I said to my mum that I was going to try and get more people involved.

“It soon became clear that people were not happy about it and that is how it started.”

Officials from Linestone Housing soon got involved and asked to help while councillors Andy Steel and John Hood were on hand to offer advice.

Ms Gillespie added: “Johnstone Castle had never had a clean-up group like that before and we know people want to help out – but only if they see others doing it first.

“I have no problem doing it first.

“We’ve got a chance to really try and do something positive for the area.”

The team meets on Saturday at 10am at the top of Maple Drive and provide all equipment.
