A “MONSTER” husband who terrified his wife and son has been found guilty of a 14-year hate campaign.

Arthur Campbell, who ran the Pitbull Gym in Renfrew, repeatedly abused Angela Spiers at their marital homes between 2001 and 2015.

He denied the allegations but was convicted at Paisley Sheriff Court last week.

A jury found 53-year-old Campbell guilty of a breach of the peace charge that stated he repeatedly conducted himself in a disorderly way, shouted, hurled abusive remarks and threatened violence on several occasions over the 14-year period.

He was convicted after his ex-wife and son Declan gave evidence against him.

Declan, 20, was reduced to tears as he told the court he now has no relationship with his father because of the abuse he witnessed while they were together.

And he said he has been left bearing emotional scars from the scenes he witnessed during his childhood.

Declan, who has a heart condition and has been fitted with a pacemaker, referred to his father as “Arthur” more than “dad” as he told the jury how he now feels towards him.

He explained: “I remember one time he swerved on the wrong side of the road and threatened to kill us because he thought my mum was cheating.

“One time, when they were fighting and arguing, she tried to run away. She left through the back door.

“I went out after her and Arthur was dragging her about by the hair. He was calling her a ‘slut, slag, cheat, tramp’ whatever – stuff like that.

“He picked her up and threw her over his shoulder and carried her in the house.”

Declan added: “I hate him. He’s a monster.”

Campbell also denied three other charges he faced – repeatedly assaulting 43-year-old Miss Spiers between 2001 and 2015 at the home they shared in Renfrew, assaulting her on one occasion by urinating on her and holding a sword against the throat of her mother, Mary Spiers, sometime in 2006.

The jury found those three charges not proven but convicted him by majority of the verbal abuse over the same time period.

After hearing that Crown Office prosecutors want Campbell to be made the subject of a Non-Harassment Order, which will see him banned from approaching or contacting his ex and their son in any way, Sheriff Tom McCartney called for background reports to be prepared ahead of sentencing and adjourned the case until next month for that to be done.

Campbell could be caged for as long as five years when he returns to the dock to learn his fate.
