THE introduction of two zebra crossings on a dangerous Linwood road has been delayed, writes Jack Thomson. 

Road safety measures are due to be put in place at two locations on Bridge of Weir Road, following a campaign by local residents and councillors. 

This decision has been made after Elizabeth Dunnion, 85, was knocked down on the road on October 6 last year. 

She passed away at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley the following day. 

Her daughter Carolann Denvir and Councillor Jim Sheridan have been at the forefront of the campaign but they have been informed works have been delayed slightly. 

In an email from Kenny Bonella, of Renfrewshire Council’s Environment and Infrastructure department, councillors and Linwood Community Council were updated on the timescales. 

The correspondence said: “I write to inform you of our progress towards installing the two zebra crossing/speed tables in Bridge of Weir Road, Linwood. 

“With your help our designs have been completed and instructions issued to our contractor to do the work.

“Unfortunately, due to Scottish Power currently making their way along Bridge of Weir Road with their high voltage connection works, our preferred timescale for installing the zebra crossings has been affected. 

“Our current intention is to begin work on the crossing at Hart Street at the end of September, with an estimated duration of 10 days, but this is entirely dependant on Scottish Power continuing along Bridge of Weir Road at their current rate. 

“The second crossing at Abernethy Drive will follow in due course, but work may not be started here until November.

“We apologise for these delays, but would ask for your understanding while we are reliant on Scottish Power’s progress to allow us to start our road works.”

Carolann had been hopeful the changes could be made before the anniversary of her mother’s death on October 7. 

Councillor Jim Sheridan has confirmed he will speak to the department and look to see if it is possible one of the crossings can be introduced before that date.

He said: “Scottish Power are doing some work there, which will unfortunately delay it but I’m going to see if we can get at least one of them installed for Carolann’s mum’s anniversary. 

“I’m going to speak to council officers to see if there’s anyway we can speed this up and expedite it. 

“We want it in sooner rather than later.”
