A CALLOUS husband who terrified his wife and son during a 14-year hate campaign has been spared jail.

Arthur Campbell, who ran the Pitbull Gym in Renfrew, repeatedly abused Angela Spiers at their marital homes between 2001 and 2015.

He denied the allegations but was convicted at Paisley Sheriff Court last month.

A jury found 53-year-old Campbell guilty of a breach of the peace charge that stated he repeatedly conducted himself in a disorderly way, shouted, hurled abusive remarks and threatened violence on several occasions over the 14-year period.

He even berated his wife while she was mourning the loss of her twin sons.

Campbell, 54, was convicted after Miss Spiers and his son Declan gave evidence against him.

During the trial, she told the court she suffered “some sort of breakdown” after losing her twins but Campbell showed no sympathy.

Miss Speirs, 43, said: “I remember lying in bed and he’d come into the room. He’d keep asking me questions when he had already asked me the questions, calling me names.

“He threw food at me and it went all over the bed and all over the floor.”

Declan, 20, was reduced to tears as he told the court how he has no relationship with his father because of the abuse he has witnessed.

He said: “I hate him. He’s a monster.”

Charges that Campbell repeatedly assaulted Miss Spiers between 2001 and 2015 at the home they shared in Renfrew and held a sword against the throat of her mum, Mary Spiers, sometime in 2006 were found not proven.

Sentencing was deferred for background reports and Campbell, of Renfrew, returned to the dock last week to learn his fate.

Advocate Dale Hughes pointed out Campbell had a good work history, had never been to jail before and had suffered tragedies himself, including the loss of the twins and the death of a daughter.

Mr Hughes added that Campbell is now the carer for his new wife, Donna, who had suffered strokes and a brain haemorrhage.

Sheriff Tom McCartney could have caged Campbell for up to five years for the offence but spared him jail, instead placing him on a Community Service Order that will see him carry out 200 hours of unpaid work over the next 12 months.

Campbell was also made the subject of a non-harassment order, which bans him from having any contact with Miss Spiers for the next two years.
