THE sister of a Johnstone woman who spent three weeks in a coma after a freak accident during a Spanish holiday has told how she is eager to catch up on the latest news now she has regained consciousness.

Monica McGeachie was placed in an induced coma at a hospital in Ibiza after suffering horrific injuries when she plunged from a first-floor window which didn’t have any glass in it.

Horrified relatives flew out to the Balearic island to be by her bedside and raised over £10,000 to help with the costs, thanks to a JustGiving campaign backed by The Gazette.

Commercial diver Monica, who lives in Johnstone Castle, was flown back to Scotland by air ambulance on August 31 and is currently being treated at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital.

She faces a painful therapy process but is expected to make a full recovery.

And her sister JoAnne has been delighted to discover she hasn’t lost the gift of the gab.

“Monica’s body is still sore and that does get her down a bit but at least she is awake and talking,” said 38-year-old JoAnn. “In fact, she hasn’t shut up since she came round.

“She is miles ahead of where we thought she would be at this stage. She was absolutely desperate to get home and is delighted.

“She is doing brilliantly but it is going to take a lot of work for her to fully recover.

“She is over the moon to be back in Scotland but is desperate to get back to work and has actually been a bit bored.”

Monica moved to Johnstone from Dunoon a year ago.

Her family, who still live in the Argyll and Bute town, have been taking turns staying in her house to be close to the RAH so they can help her with her recovery.

JoAnne added: “She has had to get her hair shaved off and was a bit down at first but now she is making jokes about it.

“In all of this, her personality has just shone through and she has always been our Monica.”

A friend set up a JustGiving page to help the family meet the costs of travelling to Spain and paying for accommodation, which quickly smashed its original target of £5,000.

JoAnne said: “We are so grateful for all of the support we have had. It is a bit too early for it to really sink in with Monica but I know she will appreciate it when it does.”
