STAFF at a Johnstone butchers had their eyes on the pies as they won three prestigious awards.

John Marshall and Son earned gold for their traditional steak pie and mince round, as well as silver for their steak and sausage pie, at the Scottish Craft Butchers Awards.

The company has consistently remained in the upper crust of the industry in recent years, making the final of the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards earlier this year.

Co-owner Bryan Marshall told The Gazette: “We are absolutely delighted, as the boys have worked so hard for this.

“We have been using the same recipe for over 60 years and all of the same ingredients.

“We also use a baker’s oven for the pastry, which we think is unique, and you can really tell the difference in the quality of the product.

“Greg Thomson is the pie man here and I must say that he’s absolutely brilliant.”

The prizes for John Marshall and Son were part of a string of successes enjoyed by Renfrewshire firms at the awards.

Elderslie Butchers won gold awards for their mince round and steak with chanterelle mushrooms, red wine and bone marrow gravy pie.

In Paisley, Gleddoch Family Butchers, in Glasgow Road, took home the Best Steak Pie in the West of Scotland crown.
