A JEALOUS husband who threatened to kill his estranged wife during a 13-mile terror drive has been jailed.

Renfrew man Paul McKinney, 52, flew into a rage and forced ex-partner Louisa into his car in May this year because he believed she was cheating on him.

The couple had split the previous week after 16 years of marriage.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how 54-year-old Louisa had rekindled a friendship with former schoolmate Kenny Carrigan.

And when McKinney found the pair together at Mr Carrigan’s flat in Glasgow’s Drumchapel area, he took her hostage while screaming: “You are f*****g dead.”

McKinney forced his hysterical and barefoot victim into his car, telling her: “You are coming with me.”

As she sobbed, McKinney punched her and told Mr Carrigan: “I am going to do her and I am then coming for you. You slept with her. I knew there was something going on.”

Minutes earlier, McKinney had smashed his estranged wife’s car windscreen.

Then he drove erratically to Renfrewshire and only stopped when he crashed.

He admitted abducting Louisa, as well as behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.

As he drove over the Erskine Bridge, McKinney refused to let his wife leave.

However, Louisa managed to call her sister, who alerted the police.

The ordeal only ended when he crashed into a pole near a farm in Linwood.

He then clambered out of the car, burst into tears and claimed he was going to kill himself.

McKinney fled the scene when police arrived but was traced the next day.

The court was told traumatised Louisa suffered bruises on her face and body.

Michael McKeown, defending, said: “Mr McKinney realises this was a horrific offence.”

Jailing McKinney for 42 months, Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC said: “Abusing, assaulting and terrorising someone is the type of behaviour that the court takes a serious view of.”
