A MAN who bombarded his mum and others with poison pen letters has been jailed.

Joseph Carson, 61, was banned from contacting his 82-year-old mum Jane and her former partner Ronald Moreland, 80, in any way in 2017 after writing disturbing letters to them.

However, he broke the ban by writing to Mr Moreland again in May this year.

Carson also wrote to neighbours of his ‘sister’ Gail McMillan, who told the court she had been “taken in” by Carson’s mother when she was 15, and her husband Alan.

In one, he accused Mr McMillan of being “a child abuser and an OAP abuser” and claimed he was involved in a murder plot.

Between September 2013 and May this year, Carson repeatedly composed, wrote and sent abusive and threatening letters to the couple, addresses in Moorpark Square, Renfrew, the Morrisons supermarket in Napier Street, Johnstone, the Ladbrokes bookmakers in Wellmeadow Street, Paisley, and other unspecified address.

As well as writing to Mr Moreland, he wrote to neighbours of the McMillans in Renfrew, intimating that the couple “intended to commit murder.”

Carson denied his guilt but was convicted by Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill following a trial at Paisley Sheriff Court this week.

As she found him guilty of all five charges he faced, Carson, who was remanded in custody over the allegations, stood up in the dock and said: “This is vile.”

Sheriff Gill jailed Carson for nine months and made him the subject of a 10-year Non-Harassment Order.

She told him: “Your behaviour is very concerning.

“My view is you’re a loose cannon and a danger to Gail McMillan and Alan McMillan and Ronald Moreland and your mother, Jane Carson.

“I’m going to impose a custodial sentence.”
