AN inspirational Barrhead woman is preparing to wave goodbye to her luscious locks, in memory of her mum and father-in law.

Kara Philliben, 45, has decided to ‘brave the shave’ to raise cash for two charities close to her heart.

The good deed is being dedicated to her mum Patricia Lindsay, who died from a heart attack in May this year, and father-in-law Michael Philliben, who lost his battle with cancer a year earlier.

Family and friends will gather to support Kara as she faces the chop at Arthurlie Inns, Barrhead, this Saturday, November 30.

Money raised will go towards the British Heart Foundation, in memory of Patricia, who was 70 when she died, and Macmillan Cancer Support, in honour of Michael, who was 74.

Kara admits it has been an emotional time for her, as well as husband Michael and children Finlay, 12, and nine-year-old Bobby.

She told the Barrhead News: “This event has made us think about it all again and brought it to the forefront of our minds.

“I have chronic back problems, so I can’t walk or run to raise the money, but I have hair, so I thought I’d raise funds this way.

“My hair’s going to grow back, so if I can raise money for these charities, I’m happy to do it.”

Kara’s mother-in-law Anne will make the first snip as the hair-raising experience gets underway.

“My family have been so supportive and everybody has been so generous so far,” added Kara. “People have raised lots of money already and donated prizes for raffles and helped out. I was aiming to raise £500 for each charity but would ideally like to hand over £1,000 for each on the day.”

The event starts at 2pm in the lounge of Arthurlie Inns, which will be licensed for children on the day, with Kara’s shave starting at 3pm.
