AN innovative cut-price supermarket is to open its first Scottish store in Renfrew with the promise of 80 new jobs.

Company Shop Group sells food and consumer goods to people who work in the NHS, emergency services and the food manufacturing industry.

In what it describes as an “innovative model,” the group buys surplus food and consumer goods from household brands such as Waitrose, Nestle, Iceland and Tesco before redistributing the products at up to 70 per cent off to its members.

This, it says, helps to stretch hard-working family budgets whilst also reducing unnecessary waste.

In a statement, the company said it is expected that the store will benefit 24,000 local members in its first year and create 80 jobs for the area.

Jane Marren, managing director, added: “We are delighted to officially announce that we are bringing our innovative model to Scotland for the first time, starting with the opening of our new store in Renfrew.

“This is an area with a thriving food manufacturing industry and hard-working families who will benefit hugely from accessing discounted food in our stores which might otherwise have gone to waste.”

Derek Mackay, MSP for Renfrewshire North and West, and Councillor John Shaw, who represents Renfrew North and Braehead, have welcomed the store’s arrival and the jobs it will bring.

The store is due to open in Renfrew’s Blythswood Retail Park on Wednesday, December 18.
