KIND-HEARTED football fans and local organisations have pledged to help the Renfrewshire Foodbank over the festive period, writes Kyle Gunn

St Mirren supporters have launched the 12 points of Christmas campaign, which will see fans donate a certain amount per point that the Paisley side amass in the next four league games.

With Motherwell, Hamilton, Livingston and St Johnstone to come, the Buddies will be hoping to raise as much cash as possible for the worthy cause.

And big Saints fan David MacDonald, who runs the Black and White Army forum and came up with the idea, can’t believe the amount of people who have become involved so far.

He told The Gazette: "There are a lot of people obviously struggling in the local community, and I think this time of year brings it even more into focus. I've seen the fantastic response that the recent foodbank collections have had at the stadium and thought it might be a wee bit of fun to challenge the St. Mirren team to get much needed points in the lead up to Christmas and at the same time to help raise money for the Renfrewshire Foodbank.

“This is the first time we've done this and it seems to have hit a chord with so many people, Saints fans and otherwise. It's been an incredible response!”

David and his St Mirren faithful would always want Jim Goodwin’s men to get as many points as possible but now there’s an added bonus.

The Buddies have won three home games so far this season and will be hoping to keep that run going tonight against Motherwell to get the drive off to flying start.

And David praised “a very passionate and committed group of supporters".

He continued: “It's a really important run of games for us and we've been playing well without getting the rewards of late, so hopefully lady luck will shine on us over these four games and we climb the table and raise a pile of money for an excellent cause into the bargain.

“It's been a shock that it's taken off as quickly as it has but I'm not massively surprised to see St. Mirren fans rallying round like this. We may not have huge numbers but we're a very passionate and committed group of supporters who are very proud of our local community.”
