A NEILSTON man claims his health has suffered for more than a year due to mould and damp in his house.

William Nicol, 38, said his relationship with his partner has also deteriorated due to the conditions at his council-owned home in Craig Road.

The couple were moved there as a ‘medical priority’ in 2018, as William suffers from emphysema – a chronic lung condition that limits his mobility.

However, he maintains an ongoing problem with dampness has yet to be resolved.

William told the Barrhead News: “There’s been all sorts done to the house since we moved in. The kitchen was ripped out and they’ve done work on the gutters but there are still issues a year down the line.

Barrhead News:

“You can see mould on the windows in the kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom.

“I’m not an unreasonable person, I just want what I’m entitled to – a weather-tight house that is dry and warm.

William is pleading for help as he feels his health has declined in recent months.

He added: “I’ve had emphysema for two years. It causes shortness of breath and I’ve also got nerve damage on my spine and right leg.

“The council is aware of all this but these living conditions are making things worse.”

Barrhead News:

William now sleeps on a sofa in his living room to escape the damp in his bedroom, while his partner, who is also his carer, sleeps on a mattress on the floor beside him.

“t's put a strain on our relationship,” said William.

Barrhead News:

East Renfrewshire Council said it has ordered more tests to assess the suitability of William’s home.

A spokesperson added: “Throughout his tenancy we have fully supported Mr Nicol and worked to provide solutions to any issues he reported, ensuring his home is of a good standard and fit for purpose.

“This includes offering to install an additional radiator and specialists visiting the property to look at the mould reported.

“Following a recent inspection, we have instructed a specialist contractor to carry out a further dampness survey of the property and will have an independent contractor carry out water tests on the gutters and roof.”

However, William doesn’t think an additional radiator is the answer.

Barrhead News:

He said: “Putting a second radiator into the bedroom defeats the purpose, as the heat is escaping through wherever the dampness is.

“I don’t want a second radiator because it’s going to cost me more money, which I can’t afford, as I’m on benefits."
