AN inspirational Barrhead woman has raised almost £2,000 by braving the shave in memory of loved ones.

Kara Philliben, 45, enjoyed a successful fundraiser with family in friends, dedicated to her mother Patricia Lindsay, who died from a heart attack in May this year, and father-in-law Michael Philliben, who lost his battle with cancer a year earlier.

Around 50 people all turned out at the Arthurlie Inns to support Kara as she parted with her luscious locks, while digging deep to support both the British Heart Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Kara told the Barrhead News: “It went amazingly. Overall we’ve raised close to £1,900 and there’s still money coming in.

“We’ve decided to leave the collection buckets down at the pub for another couple of weeks then we’ll do a final count after that.

“It was a really good turnout with lots of friends and family showing their support, and the people that mattered were there."

Kind-hearted Kara could not wait for the first snip of the scissors as she was cheered onto the chair. And now, she's completely embracing her new 'do!

She added: “I’m loving the new look, albeit it has gotten a bit colder for me. Funnily enough, everyone’s saying it’s made me look younger. My wee boy has been looking at me funny, though saying I don’t look like mummy anymore but he’s getting used to it.

“Everyone’s dead chuffed and pleased with how it all went, and we’re all so glad we’ve been able to raise the money and awareness for the charities."

In tribute to her mother and father-in-law, who the good deed was dedicated to, Kara said: "I wish they were still here, they would have enjoyed the day, mum would have won something in the raffle no doubt and it's a day we would all have loved, but I'm proud I've done it.

"I would like to give a huge thanks to Peter Mulholland Jnr for letting us use the Arthurlie Inns which was a lovely wee venue. And a big thanks to everyone that donated raffle prizes including Bickets the butchers, Mode Dea, Anne Philliben for hampers, Dapper Dogs, Steven Brown, Repose, Dominoes, Catherine's Jewellery, the lovely ladies at Tuesday bingo, Arthurlie Club, for all their amazing donations and for our lovely food, as well as so many other donators."
