IT was a successful night for the Liberal Democrats in Renfrewshire, as both of its candidates managed to double the vote share for their party.
Ross Stalker, who stood in Paisley and Renfrewshire North, attracted 7.4 per cent of the vote – up from the 3.2 per cent John Boyd secured in the 2017 General Election.
And Jack Clark, candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, received 6.8 per cent of the vote – an increase from the 3.2 per cent gained by Eileen McCartin two years ago.
Mr Clark said: “It was a good result in both North and South. Nationally it was gutting to see Jo Swinson lose her seat though.”
Councillor McCartin, who sits on Renfrewshire Council as the sole Lib Dem, said:
“We went back up to the level we would normally have had over the years in this area.
“We are trying to improve but I am pleased for the two candidates.
“We were not going to win but these are two young men who are the future of the Lib Dems. Congratulations to Mhairi Black and Gavin Newlands.”
