JOHNSTONE workers who lost their jobs after the collapse of travel firm Thomas Cook will host an event this weekend to celebrate being handed a fresh start.

A total of five staff at the Thomas Cook branch in the town’s High Street faced a bleak future when the company went bust.

However, they were offered a lifeline after rival firm Hays Travel bought Thomas Cook.

The Johnstone shop is now operating as Hays Travel, with the same five members of staff on hand to greet customers.

And they will officially open the branch this Saturday, with customers old and new invited.

Branch manager Yvonne Barber told The Gazette: “We will be offering tea and coffee and serving mince pies.

“We’re also organising a tombola to raise money for the Active Communities youth group as we are keen to give something back to the community as a thank-you for the support they offered us.”

The open day will run from 9.15am until 5pm.
