PEOPLE across Renfrewshire are clamouring to get their teeth into the latest vegan treat on offer from a popular high street baker.

The vegan steak bake hit the shelves in Greggs shops this week, with hungry customers eager to see how it compares to another successful innovation, the vegan sausage roll.

However, the bad news for people in Johnstone, Linwood and Erskine is that, for the time being, they will have travel to Paisley if they want to sample the new product.

This is because not every Greggs has been given supplies during the roll-out phase – and stores in High Street, Johnstone, Bridge Street, Linwood, and Bridgewater Shopping Centre, Erskine, have so far missed out.

Shops that do have them say they are selling fast and going down well with customers.

James Gilmartin, supervisor at the Greggs branch at the Phoenix Retail Park, in Linwood Road, Paisley, said: "They are in high demand and are flying out the door.

"It's evidence that people are becoming more switched on to veganism, especially since our vegan sausage roll does so well."

At Greggs in The Paisley Centre, supervisor Stuart Powrie added: "When there is a new product, people will buy it – and that's certainly the case with the vegan steak bake.

"Veganism is catching on and our vegan products are selling really well."

The Greggs store in Erskine is getting its first supplies on Thursday, January 16, when staff expect a big rush from customers keen to put the new product to the taste test.

Created to mirror some of the original Greggs steak bake’s classic features, the vegan bake has 96 layers of puff pastry but, instead of a meat filling, has Quorn pieces, diced onions and a vegan gravy.

Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: “Our vegan sausage roll launch was a huge success and we’ve been working tirelessly to expand our vegan-friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.

“The launch of our vegan steak bake is another key milestone on our journey to become our customers’ favourite for food-on-the-go.”
