THE MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North has told of his pride after raising funds for a charity close to his heart.

Gavin Newlands presented Bliss Scotland, part of the UK’s leading charity for babies born premature or sick, with a bumper cheque after striding out at the annual Edinburgh Kiltwalk last September.

The SNP man, whose two daughters were born prematurely and in need of neonatal care, raised £1,227 by donning his kilt for the 24-mile ‘Mighty Stride’ around the capital.

He completed the walk with fellow MP David Linden, who joined him to present the cheque.

“This was my first time doing the Kiltwalk and I am delighted I was able to do so in support of Bliss Scotland, as neonatal care and premature birth are causes close to my heart,” said Mr Newlands.

“My wife Lynn had pre-eclampsia with both our girls. My oldest daughter, Emma, was born six weeks premature at 3lbs 10oz by emergency caesarean and only after a fortnight of tremendous care and support at the Southern General’s Special Care Baby Unit could my wife and child come home safe and healthy.

“I was proud to walk alongside my good friend David Linden, who has campaigned tirelessly on this issue since he was elected in 2017.”
