A COUNCILLOR has described a road near a care home as a “death trap” after two new bus stops have been placed on a blind bend.

Stephen Burns has insisted the locations of the bus shelters in Stanely Road, Paisley, are dangerous after they were requested by Stanely Care Home.

The route is served by McGill’s 26A and Key Coaches service 3.

The Paisley Southwest councillor has also written to police to ask them to carry out extra patrols on Brediland Road where he says cars are consistently speeding near Brediland and St Paul’s Primary schools.

Cllr Burns said: “The two bus stops have been placed in a blind spot and I think it is an accident waiting to happen.

“It is an area where accidents do happen already because of speeding and I think this is going to make it a death trap.

“Regarding Brediland Road, myself and Councillor Lorraine Cameron have written to police to ask if they will up their patrols and carry out spot checks to deter speeding. This is near two primary schools and has been an ongoing concern for a while.

“We’ve also written to the council’s roads department.”

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, which is responsible for putting bus stops in place, said the position of the bus stops in Stanely Road was agreed with Renfrewshire Council.

And the council has said road safety was considered before installing the bus stops and bosses believe they are “suitably positioned.”

The council also said it will look into the concerns raised about dangerous driving on Brediland Road.

A council spokesman said: “Road safety is carefully considered before any bus stop is installed and the new stops on Stanely Road are suitably positioned.

“We are not aware of any issues in relation to speeding on Brediland Road, where two school crossing patrollers are located, but will look into the concerns raised by the elected member in consultation with colleagues at Police Scotland.”

An SPT spokesperson said: “The bus stops on Stanely Road were requested by Stanely Care Home and agreed with Renfrewshire Council.

“The position of the bus stops was agreed with Renfrewshire Council as the roads authority who are responsible for matters of road safety.”

Cops were reportedly out with speed guns on Brediland Road on Friday afternoon as schools were finishing in a bid to catch throttle-happy drivers.

Paisley’s local area commander Rhona Fraser said: “Every time we get a council-led concern sent to us we will respond to that and we will try and put some one out with the guns. There are lots of officers keen to do it and we did send some out on Friday around when schools were finishing.

“As soon as we have the resources available we will get officers out to look at these issues.”
