THE sale of one of Renfrewshire’s best-known hotels has been hailed as “welcome news.”

The Erskine Bridge Hotel & Spa is now owned by MGM Muthu Hotels after it bought the business for an undisclosed sum.

And the deal has been welcomed by Renfrewshire Council leader Iain Nicolson, who represents Erskine and Inchinnan, as he believes it will help to protect and provide jobs.

Councillor Nicolson said: “This is welcome news and it underscores my long-held belief that there was always potential and a future for the hotel and, more importantly, for the jobs it provides in the local community.

“The Erskine Bridge Hotel has been a landmark since it started life as the Esso Hotel and it was there at the start of development of Erskine as a new community.

“With development of the manufacturing district ongoing and planned expansion of Glasgow Airport on its doorstep, the future looks a bit brighter for the hotel and its part in Renfrewshire’s offer to visitors.”

The hotel, which has a self-contained spa, pool and gym, as well as a function suite for up to 500 guests, will now be known as the Muthu Glasgow River Hotel.

MGM Muthu describes itself as “one of Europe’s leading leisure groups, with resorts in Portugal, Spain, England, Scotland and France.”

It also operates resorts in Cuba and India.

The investor is a conglomerate, mainly based in India, whose business interests include an entertainment park in Chennai, where the firm was established in 1963.

Specialist business property advisors Christie & Co brokered the off-market purchase of the hotel on behalf of its previous owners Cosmopolitan Hotels.

Stuart Drysdale, director at Christie & Co, said: “We have had a long-standing relationship with Cosmopolitan Hotels and were asked to conduct a confidential marketing campaign to find a buyer for the hotel.

“MGM Muthu Hotels are expanding their portfolio in Scotland and the purchase allows them to significantly increase their room stock and secure a large hotel, with easy access to Glasgow Airport, and act as a starting point for overseas visitors exploring the Loch Lomond area and the wider west coast of Scotland.”
