A COMMUNITY council on the verge of collapse has made a desperate plea for new members.

Foxbar and Brediland Community Council has launched an appeal after it struggled to attract enough nominations back in September, when only seven people came forward to join the group.

The Paisley-based organisation must have a minimum of 10 people on it by the end of March or it will fold.

Since September, just one person has stepped up to join the council and, as the deadline fast approaches, chairman Tony Lawler has made an urgent call to the community to help save the group.

Mr Lawler says it is not only the council which is under threat, but also the area’s gala day, which was held last year for the first time since 2006.

He added: “Since September we have had one more volunteer, but we need a minimum of 10 people for the community council to carry on and we have until March 27 to get at least another two volunteers. Otherwise, the community council will fold.

“It would be a shame to lose any of the things that we started. The council was involved in two key things last year – creating a growing space for the area and reinstating the gala day.

“We would really love to have another gala day and if we can get these nominations, we should have enough time to make that happen. But if we don’t, we could lose it again.

“The very least community councillors have to do is attend a monthly meeting. That’s it. If they want to get involved in things we do beyond that, that’s up to them. But it’s something where you actually can do very little and get a lot out of it.

“It’s fun as well. People who have been on the council over the years have found it very rewarding and we provide an important voice for the community.”

The council was also heavily involved in the creation of the Foxbar Local Place Plan.

The community-led plan was created in 2018 with the support of the Scottish Government’s ‘Making Places’ initiative and helped to identify potential areas for change and enhancement in the community.

Some ideas included better cycling infrastructure and improvements to Durrockstock Park.

Mr Lawler added: “There are so many great aspirations we could work towards as a council, following on from the Place Plan we were involved in.

“It’s important to note though while there is still lots to do to make our community a nicer place to live and work, being a community councillor doesn’t take up much time.”

The council normally meets on the last Wednesday of the month and anyone who is considering joining should call 0141 618 7104 for more information.
