THOUSANDS of carers are benefitting from extra financial help so they can look after relatives in need.

In the past two years, there have been more than 14,000 Carer’s Allowance Supplement payments made to carers in Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, according to new Scottish Government statistics.

A total of £452 is provided across two payments each year – one in June and the other in December.

The bill for the Carer’s Allowance Supplement across Scotland totals £36million. These payments top up the Carer’s Allowance, which currently stands at £66.15 per week.

A total of 10,490 extra payments have been made in Renfrewshire since 2018, with 3,830 in East Renfrewshire.

Social Security Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said: “Carers make an invaluable contribution to society and it’s important that we recognise their vital role.

“As part of the budget, we announced that we will uprate the payment in line with inflation – meaning the supplement over the next year will be £460.20.”
