CUSTOMERS at a busy Renfrew supermarket got more than they bargained for as staff staged a special party.

The team at Tesco used 300 balloons to decorate the store and served up free cake to mark its 40th ‘birthday.’

Among those taking part in the celebrations were Gail Allison, 57, and Selena Cameron, 58, who have clocked up four decades of service at the Broadloan store.

Gail said: “It’s a nice and friendly store and there’s a real family atmosphere.

“You make friends with all the regular customers and it’s good to have a chat with them.”

Selena added: “I’ve enjoyed working here.

“I was only a teenager when I started and didn’t think I would still be working here 40 years later.

“My own daughter works here and there are a lot of members of staff who have had family members working here over the years.”

The store first opened its doors on February 19, 1980, and although much has changed in the retail scene since then, bosses insist the business remains at the heart of the community.

Bill Cruickshanks, community champion at the Renfrew store, said: “When the customers come in, they’ll bump into their neighbours or someone they haven’t seen for a while and have a chat.

“I feel proud to work for Tesco and enjoy helping local people when they want to do a wee bag-pack for charity.”
